Help Desk Simulator

Live shift

Practice the ticket. Then the interview.

Read a fictional ticket, choose a response, and see where that choice fails before a real user is on the line. For the interview and the first week — not a full desktop lab.

  • No signup. Free tier is real practice, not a gated demo.
  • 25 fictional tickets stay in this browser.
  • Not a certification and not a job offer.

Inside the product

Four formats. One kind of judgment.

The cards are drawn on this page so you can see the shape of the work. The window above is a preview. Free practice starts in the bank.

Queue

A queue, not a slideshow

The free shift is one sitting of 25 tickets. You read the user the way the ticket arrived, pick one response, and move on.

  • Priority, category, and the user’s own words
  • Four responses, then why the best one holds
  • Progress stays in this browser until you sign in

Ticket choice

A miss names the failure mode

The free subset is ticket multiple choice. Pro’s bank is 500 questions. A wrong pick explains what that move would do on a live desk.

  • One best response, not a vague “all of the above”
  • Why it holds, and what a real environment would do
  • Each item tagged to a skill you can practice next

Forty people report the same VPN drop in ten minutes. What first?

  • AWork each report alone
  • BOne incident, one workaround
  • CReboot, then close them
  • DWait for the vendor

Why. Forty matching reports are one incident, not forty tickets.

STAR

A behavioral answer needs a spine

Interviews ask for a story. STAR practice checks for a situation, a task, an action, and a result. Completeness is the score.

  • Prompt, then the four parts
  • A pretty paragraph with a missing result still misses
  • The card on this page is a scaffold, not a person
Practice STAR prompts
STAR scaffold

A user is furious because a recurring failure blocked their work.

  1. SFront desk, third jam, a packet due in twenty minutes.
  2. TGet them printing and link the old tickets.
  3. ANamed the repeat, set a callback, checked the jam.
  4. RThey printed. The fault went out with the history.

Practice scaffold. Not a quote, and not a score.

Step order

Put the work in desk order

Some items are not a lettered choice. You sequence the shift: restore a way to work, then chase the cause, then write it down.

  • The order is the answer
  • Workaround before a long diagnosis
  • The note has to help the next technician

Practice the interview or practice the job

Practice the interview

Rehearse the question before someone asks it.

Entry-level help desk interviews lean on scenarios: an angry caller, a password that “has to happen now,” a story from your last job. Practice those shapes here.

  • Interview Q&A with a key-point checklist
  • STAR behavioral prompts
  • Follow-up chains when the first answer is thin
Practice the interview

Practice the job

Run the shift. Then read the report.

Free practice is the job-shaped half: fictional users, the decision a technician actually makes, and a four-skill readout when the queue is done.

  • 25 free tickets, no signup
  • Instant feedback on the choice you made
  • On-screen shift report. PDF export is Pro.
Practice the job

Shift report

Four skills. One readout at the end of the shift.

The report is a practice readout. It is not a hiring score, not an employment credential, and not a certification result.

  • Security

Confirm identity before a password change. Urgency is a tactic, not proof.

  • Empathy

Name the frustration, then the next step. A correct fix delivered cold still fails the person.

  • Escalation

Forty identical reports are one incident. Escalate with what you already tried.

  • Troubleshooting

Restore a way to work, then isolate the cause. The business function comes first.

What this is

Fictional tickets. The judgment is the practice.

Nobody on this page is quoting a customer or a founder. The queue is made up. The patterns are the ones a Tier 1 desk repeats: verify identity, treat a burst as one incident, restore work before a long diagnosis, and keep access least-privilege. It is not a CompTIA course, and it is not a job offer.

Pricing

Free is the shift. Pro is the full bank.

Pro is $20/month. Live checkout is not open yet, so nothing here charges a card. The pricing page explains the gates. The amount above is the planned Pro rate.

Questions

Short answers, before you scroll the guide.

Read the full FAQ
  • Is the free tier really free?

Yes. Twenty-five tickets run in the browser with no signup and no account. The free tier is real practice, not a gated demo. Progress stays on this device until you sign in.

  • What does Pro include, and what does it cost?

Pro is planned at $20/month when live checkout opens. It includes 500 practice questions, five question types, employer packs, a learning path (diagnostic, review, mock, report), mistake review, and a PDF shift report. Nothing on this page charges a card. Pricing explains the gates. Free tickets stay free.

  • Is this a certification or a job offer?

No. The tickets are fictional. This is not an employment credential, and it is not affiliated with CompTIA or any other certification body. Practice does not guarantee a job or an exam pass.

  • What are the five question types?

Ticket multiple choice, interview Q&A, STAR behavioral, follow-up chains, and troubleshoot step ordering. The free shift focuses on ticket choices. Pro unlocks the full mix across the 500-question bank.

  • Are the tickets from a real company?

No. The tickets are fictional. The decision patterns follow widely used ITIL-aligned service desk practice: verify identity before a credential change, treat a burst of identical reports as one incident, restore work before a long diagnosis, and keep access least-privilege.

How the simulator works

Take a shift on a virtual IT desk. Each ticket in this help desk simulator is a situation support teams see every week: a password reset that might be social engineering, a printer that jams for the third time, a VPN that fails only on hotel Wi-Fi, an executive who wants an exception “today, please.” You read the message, choose one of four responses, and learn why that choice holds or where it backfires.

The shift scores four skills — security, empathy, escalation, and troubleshooting — because those are the dimensions a service desk lead actually watches. At the end you get a breakdown of which skill needs the next rep. It is light judgment training, not a full desktop lab.

Why practice with a help desk simulator?

Most interview prep stops at definitions: DHCP, Active Directory, what an SLA is. Entry-level interviews, and the first month on the job, are usually lost on judgment. Verify identity before a password reset. Recognize that forty simultaneous tickets are one incident. Restore the business function before you diagnose the hardware. A simulator lets you miss those calls here, with an explanation, before an interviewer or a real customer is watching.

  • Interview preparation. “An angry user calls about…” is a staple prompt. The help desk interview questions guide lists the ones that keep showing up.
  • Skill diagnosis. The shift report shows whether the weak spot is security thinking, empathy under pressure, or knowing when to escalate.
  • A cheap mistake. Every weaker answer names the failure mode it would cause on a live desk.

What the free shift covers

  • Accounts and passwords

Resets, lockouts, MFA, and the social-engineering attempts inside them.

  • Printers and peripherals

The recurring jam and the person who is done filing tickets.

  • Network and VPN

Hotel Wi-Fi, remote work, and the outage that is really one incident.

  • Software and permissions

Access requests, least privilege, and the update that broke a tool.

  • Hardware

A dead laptop at the worst moment, and a lost device that is a security event.

Is this like the real job?

The tickets are fictional. The decision patterns are not. Identity checks before credential changes, out-of-band checks on suspicious requests, workaround-first incident handling, and time-limited least privilege all follow widely used ITIL-aligned service desk practice. This help desk simulator is also a service desk simulator for judgment: incidents, plus access requests, policy exceptions, and security events. For the longer version, read what a help desk simulator is and how to use one, service desk vs help desk, and how accurate a service desk simulator can be.

Who this is for

Career changers moving into IT, students adding judgment reps beside CompTIA A+ or Google IT Support study, and junior technicians who want more tickets before week one. It is not an official course, it is not affiliated with CompTIA, and it does not certify you for a job. Hiring managers sometimes use a shift as a warm-up for what solid Tier 1 judgment looks like. A wider study path is on the free help desk training guide. Pricing and the full FAQ live on Pricing and FAQ.
